Plastics Design Process

More than 60% of new product ideas never make it to market or fail when they do. To turn a great idea into a successful new product it is vital to follow a proven development process. You can achieve the results that you want by following MotionTouch's easy, proven development cycle. You can save time and money by following this safe design path with us. A brief explanation is:

1. Produce detailed designs

   These will take your concept and turn it into drawings from which the product could be manufactured. We work closely with you throughout the process. We use SolidWorks, a sophisticated 3D CAD package. This allows us to design each component and then assemble the components to build the product in 3D. We can then examine every facet of its features, appearance and structural strength and integrity. We can email you a CAD design viewer that enables you to manipulate the images so that you can provide feedback into the process. At this stage we can also produce photographic quality images. These can be used to review the product with your colleagues and potential customers. Once you have reviewed the designs we can make any changes that you may require. In our experience customer can often use the designs and 3D pictures to sell the idea or obtain 3rd party funding at the end of this stage.

2. Produce a Prototype

   Once you are happy with the designs the next stage would be to make a prototype. This will demonstrate the appearance, dimensions and features of the product and be made, if possible, of the material intended for the final production (or one very similar). The prototype can be used to check the design with your colleagues and can also be shown to your potential customers. It will give the chance to try the product on the market. At this stage you may also choose to have the design altered based on feedback or test results. Once the designs are altered a new prototype would be made.

3. Move to Mass Production

   Once you have tested the prototype we can move to production. In order to achieve the low unit cost and optimum quality it is usually necessary to make tooling at this stage. Once made the tooling can be used for ongoing production runs. You could start with a small production run and increase the quantities once the market takes off.
